Gutter Replacement by a Plumber in Sunnybank Hills

14 Sept 2026 · A Grade Plumbing & Gas

When gutters become heavily corroded, damaged or affected by repeated temporary repairs, they can eventually stop doing the job they were designed to do. For a property in Sunnybank Hills, A Grade Plumbing & Gas was called in to inspect a deteriorated section of front guttering that was no longer effectively directing rainwater away from the home.

The inspection identified significant corrosion across approximately 15 metres of existing M type guttering, along with a badly deteriorated downpipe. Rather than continuing with short-term repairs, the recommended solution was to replace the affected guttering and downpipe to restore more reliable stormwater management.

Identifying Guttering Problems at the Sunnybank Hills Property

During the inspection, the team found that the existing guttering had deteriorated considerably. Previous repair attempts were also evident, including the use of duct tape around sections of the gutter.

While temporary repairs can sometimes provide a short-term solution, the extent of the corrosion meant the existing gutter was no longer suitable as a reliable drainage system. Rainwater was dispersing from the damaged section directly in front of the property's entry door, with the occupants having to use a bucket to collect water during rainfall.

The existing Colorbond downpipe at the front of the property was also heavily corroded and damaged. With deterioration affecting both the guttering and downpipe, replacement offered a more appropriate long-term solution than attempting further repairs.

Replacing the Damaged Guttering

The first stage of the work involved carefully removing approximately 15 metres of existing guttering from the front low set section of the property. The deteriorated guttering and previous temporary repair materials were removed before the roof, and fascia interfaces were prepared for the new installation.

A new M type guttering system was then installed as a like for like replacement. Particular attention was given to the gutter fall, with the system configured from the central point towards both sides of the property. This allows rainwater to flow towards the designated drainage points rather than accumulating in problem areas.

The new guttering was securely fixed, with the necessary joints, outlets, connections and seals completed as part of the installation. Correct installation and sealing are important considerations when replacing guttering, particularly where the previous system has already experienced significant deterioration.

Upgrading the Corroded Downpipe

The existing corroded downpipe was also removed and replaced with a square PVC downpipe. PVC was recommended for this particular application because it provides a corrosion-resistant alternative to the deteriorated metal component.

The new downpipe was connected into the existing stormwater system using an appropriate square stormwater fitting. The connection was configured with consideration for overflow conditions and the nearby driveway, helping ensure excess rainwater can be managed appropriately during periods of heavy rainfall.

Replacing a severely corroded component rather than continuing to repair it can help reduce the likelihood of recurring maintenance issues and provide a more durable solution for ongoing stormwater management.

Roof Maintenance and Skylight Dome Removal

As part of the approved works, the team also removed an existing skylight dome from the front section of the roof. Associated fixings and deteriorated sealing materials were removed as required, with the surrounding roof area left safe and weather resistant following removal.

Any permanent roof repairs or replacement work can be assessed separately if required. This is another example of why regular roof maintenance can be valuable, as identifying deteriorated components early can help property owners address issues before they become more significant.

Completing the Guttering and Stormwater Drainage Work

Once the gutter and downpipe replacement was completed, the newly installed system was inspected to check the gutter falls, joints, outlets and stormwater connections. The work area was also cleared of construction debris.

For homeowners looking for an experienced plumber in Sunnybank, Sunnybank Hills or surrounding suburbs, a professional inspection can be worthwhile when gutters show signs of corrosion, leaks, overflowing water or repeated repair work. Guttering maintenance forms an important part of protecting a property from uncontrolled rainwater and helping maintain an effective stormwater drainage system.

A Grade Plumbing & Gas provides a range of plumbing and gas services beyond guttering and roof-related work. The team can also assist with services including hot water system repair and drain cleaning, helping homeowners address a range of plumbing issues through one local provider.

In this Sunnybank Hills project, replacing the failed guttering and corroded downpipe provided a practical long-term solution to an ongoing drainage problem. The completed work restored the front section of the property's rainwater management system while replacing components that had reached the end of their useful service life.
